Oh, and there's a multiplayer mode that has one game type. I can just roll my marble around to my heart's content, without the developers waving their dicks in my face and parting their arse cheeks to make me sniff their realistic physics engine. I don't have to worry about escorting stupid Non-Player Characters, learning a million different button combinations or shooting space marines in the face with improbably large weapons. I enjoy the no-frills-attached, laid-back style of old-school gaming. So why am I so inexplicably thrilled by playing MBU?īecause it's cathartic. It's about allowing the player to become comfortable with the game's mechanics before the really nasty stuff starts making appearences. But that's hardly a unique feature, is it? The majority of games start simple and gradually get more difficult, it more or less comes as standard. Yes, it's nicely set out, with a comfortable difficulty curve leading you through groups of 'Beginner', 'Intermediate' and 'Advanced' stages, the earliest of which are easy enough that even Roger Ebert could beat them, and the latest of which are exercises in controller-snapping frustration. And this goes on for 60 levels, ten times more than it's spiritual predecessor MM yet not once did I lose interest or get to the point where I simply didn't want to play anymore, and that kind of engagement is something that the vast majority of big modern releases fail to manage. Occasionally you have to collect a specified amount of gems before the exit will become available, but that's the only deviation from the formula.

The aim of the game is to navigate a marble through a series of increasingly-difficult mazes. MBU is a game developed by GarageGames and released in January 2006, incidently totally unrelated to Marble Madnesson the NES, even though conceptually they're identical. Yet every now and again you get a pleasant surprise, and that's exactly what I got recently when I played Marble Blast Ultraon the Xbox Live Arcade. Often, it's a pretty standard affair - the aforementioned Gears of War, the latest Call of Dutygame, the year's most up-to-date sports iteration. I can't possibly begin to understand such a diverse group of individuals, but what I do know is that there is no better way of identifying the latest gaming trend than by checking out what the 360 fanboys are playing. The folks on Xbox Live are a curious bunch for every pre-pubescent Gears of War-playing snivelling retard, there is a mature, thoughtful and intelligent gamer who doesn't care about crouching down over your face whenever they kill you.
